Audi Club North America (ACNA) -

Celebrate Audi Day! (Quattro de Mayo)

Audi Club members (and anyone else who shows up) are welcome to join us in a trip to the Great Smokey Mountains nestled along the Tennessee and North Carolina borders. In this area lies what is considered one of the country's most exciting and challenging roads. It's an 11 mile stretch of US 129 known as The Dragon. In those 11 miles, you'll encounter 318 turns on a tight 2 lane road that hugs the mountains.

We will be staying at the Jamison Inn and will serve as our Event HQ. We're not reserving a block of rooms. Right now, there's plenty of occupancy. The rates are good and includes a continental breakfast. We will be staying for 2 nights.

We will plan on starting early on Saturday to run the Dragon a few times before the area is taken over by bikers. We will break for lunch and then journey onto the Cherehola Skyway - a scenic vista drive up and over the ridge of a mountain (start at an elevation of 800ft above sea level and climb to over 5200ft above sea level). We will also travel to Fontana Dam (largest man made dam East of the Mississippi) and other mountain roads before returning to the Dragon for a late afternoon/evening run.

We will be using FRS radios during the travel down and back. For those wishing to go along, please have your Audi inspected to insure it is operating in top notch condition. The mountain roads will be hard on brakes and tires. Make sure the tires have plenty of tread and that the pads and rotors are in good condition. It's advisable to make sure there are no leaks or other conditions that could cause mechanical problems. Once we're in the mountains, it is extremely difficult to get repairs or service (cell phone will most likely not work).

The Dragon trip is a lot of fun. We stress the importance of vehicle and driver safety first. Know what your limitations are. This is not a race. We're not out to prove something, so any attitudes are best left at home. First time visitors to the area are encouraged to drive through the Dragon at a very slow pace so they are introduced to the road, the road conditions, and the surrounding environment. From there, the driver should only drive at a comfortable pace (typically well below the limits of the car). With this focus on safety, the driver is rewarded with a driving experience that they will remember for a lifetime!

We will, for stragglers, assemble at Tabcat Bridge Saturday AM between 0800 and 0900. Catch us on FRS 9-14 (primary) or 17-2 (alternate).

We have coordinated with Minis On The Dragon (MOTD) and East TN Riders, and we know what to expect. ;)
