not sure the question here, but if you are asking why slower bikes do not pull over for cars may have to do with all we have is gravel pull offs along the road and some riders are scared to death of gravel. I have already been to 2 accidents at the pull offs this year. Both were pulling over to take pictures and grabed the front break. One had to go to the hospital with a broken shoulder. But I have seen some pull to the white line and wave faster bikes and cars around them. But like anything else this does not apply to everyone, I have seen slow cars and bikes go from one end to the other not allowing anyone to pass.

^^^^Amen. There are people on both sides of the fence. Its a public road, we all have to understand, that its not a requirement, It's a courtesy.

not sure to whom the question is addressed.

But the answer is mostly whoever does the holding up traffic here & similar mountain roads is simply riding/driving as they do on the interstate, in the left lane, speedlimit, passive/agressive, ego projection. Or, they have no knowledge or ability of how to share a mountain road. Some willingly might do so if they had the knowledge & ability.

First thing to do is to help educable flatlanders understand that the earth is round & that norms vary from place to place. I guess there is a McDonalds in
Rome somewhere but I've not seen it...

Second thing to do is try to remember that an astinishing percentage of your fellow citizens actually expect the Romans to build numerous McDonalds before their tour group arrives. Like, when in Rome the romans need to ride like I do back home...

In the really old days before the gap road joined Cherokee, Dollywood & Gatlinburg,et al, on the mainstreammustdobrightlights list passing & letpass was simply a daily, commute to work, go get groceries fact of life among us hillbillies. IOW, visitors now think the road is full of out of control bikers always passing. Fact is, there is as percentage of traffic, far less passing now than 25 years ago when plain folks simply going somehere almost always helped a faster vehicle get around. Did anyone, tourist, ever stop to think about how quick a young woman who lives on Yellow Creek & commutes to a job in Maryville in her box stock Focus might be if she's late for work???

& BTW, you don't need to pull over off the road for fast bikes. You simply need to drive smoothly & steady & stay in your lane & the fast guys can size you up, make a judgement to trust you & make a totally clean, safe move. If you think the vehicle ahead of you needs to be off the pavement you may be looking for McDonalds.

Last thing - my lovely wife who turns some quite respectable small displacement times on 4 wheels @ RA, VIR, Barber, TGP stopped running the gap road years ago because running the gap road & constantly needing to pass bikes got to be way too risky & not much fun. The road's reputation that folks come for now is long gone already... years gone...
