I was wondering how cell phones work at the gap?
I can't believe I'm asking this question considering I spend less then 30 minutes a year on one.
Thanks

I just happened to talk to them on the phone yesterday and they told me not much if any cell phone reception in that area.

The reception for any cell phone or pager is none at Deal's Gap unless there is a tower placed recently. Best to rely on landline phone. I have my pager and went there last year. No reception at all. Even cell phone too.

Good to have peace but nice to contact someone for backup.

At the overlook at the top I have been able to make a call. Other than that NADA

The entire western NC can be spotty for coverage. Seems Verizon has the best luck, as far as at the Gap we have zero coverage.

I have US Cellular and get so so reception. The overlook gets a little. I have been fortunate enough to get signal in 2 squares and close to guardrail when I really needed it.

At the overlook if I stand up on the wall with my left leg out, My right hand pointed up at the sky while jumping up and down, I may get 1/2 of bar....:D I love Cingular....

Verizon and Nextel seem to have the best luck on up here, but what you really need is a phone that still picks up analog signal. I've got the tri-mode phone from Verizon and can get signal everywhere I typically sit/shoot.

c'mon, you're supposed to be riding, not chatting on the phone like an 8th grade girl. :)

Well, some of us guys have to check in with our wives or we won't be allowed to go anymore......

Last year a funny thing happened.

I always refer to my nightly calls home as "checking in with my parole officer".

One night around 11:00PM I was down at the pay phone checking in. My buddy Mark was there also, and a guy on a ST1300 pulled into the parking lot. He talked to Mark for a while and then asked him if he knew which way to head to find a place to stay for the night. Mark told him that he was not very familiar with the area and then pointed over to me and said, "My buddy Tank is on the phone with his parole officer, but when he gets off the phone he can give you directions".

The guy looked over at me, and then back at him, and then kind of freaked out and just threw on his helmet and took off!
