| DESCRIPTION: NC 28 is one of the best outs in Western NC. Provides
awesome scenery, great riding and the Biggest Dam in
Eastern US. NC 28 runs along the Fontana Dam system,
as well as along the Little TN River valley. This portion
of NC 28 runs along the Fontana Dam system and brings
you to both the top and bottom of the Largest Dam on
the east coast. The pavement from US129 until the Dam
has some raised spots in it, but not bad, once you pass
the Dam, new pavement all the way to the second part
of NC28. This road will also give you several scenic
pull
overs for shots of Fontana Lake. Plenty of curves for
the first 25 miles changing to 4 lane then back to the
curves. |

You can reach both the bottom and top of the Dam from
this route. The Bottom access will be at the bridge about
10 miles down NC 28; you will see the blue TVA sign.
The first road before the bridge takes you to the left
side near the power plant. The road right after the Bridge
brings you into the Fontana campgrounds and gives you
another view of the base of the Dam. After you leave
there, go past Fontana Village to the fork in the road,
and take the left. That will put you on top of the Dam,
a
sight worth seeing. |
